My Russian bride and I got a problem. She has lived in Crimea all her life. She was married there and in 2015 got divorced. Recently we learned that the U.S. does not recognize any decisions of Crimean courts made after February 2014. What do we do now? How can we proceed with a K1 visa for my bride if she is still deemed married by American authorities?
As you may know, in March 2014 Russia annexed Crimea in violation of international law. This annexation has been condemned by the United Nations General Assembly. Therefore, all acts of the current Crimean authorities are seen as unlawful by international community. This includes every post-February 2014 decision of Crimean courts. Hence, the United States will not recognize your bride's 2015 divorce until and unless it is legitimized in Ukraine. I advise your bride to consult with Karina Duvall on the ways to obtain a valid divorce judgment. After that judgment is obtained you will be able то proceed with the K1 visa for your bride.
